The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it opposes the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for university staff members because it will prevent the educational advancement of the country.

ASUU Kano Zonal Coordinator, Mahmud Lawan stated this while addressing journalist at a news conference on Friday in Kano.

KANO FOCUS reports that the federal government has directed all employees to register with IPPIS by the end of October or face salary stoppage.

Mahmoud Lawan, a Professor of Political Science says the use of IPPIS also contradicts the laws establishing Nigerian universities.

Mr Lawan said IPPIS has failed to capture the peculiarities of universities in Nigeria.

“It is unclear and to what extent has the IPPIS platform captured peculiarities such as sabbatical, visiting and adjunct appointment, retirement age of academics of 70 years as against 60 years in the federal civil service.” He said.

Mr Lawan added that the office of the Accountant General of the federation had no constitutional power to direct the affairs of the universities in respect to payment of staff remunerations.
