Emir Sanusi links Kano excessive heat to indiscriminate felling of trees

Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said while signifying the high importance of Tree Planting by everybody, cautioned Kano Indigents against allowing the State to Become Desert.
KANO FOCUS reports that the Emir stated this while flagging off the planting of over 3 million trees to launch the 2024 statewide tree planting campaign as part of measures to checkmate climate change in the state.
The Emir, reminded the State residents of how they suffered excessive heats that nearly crippled the general activities of the Citizens, saying that was enough lessons for everybody to go ahead and plant at least a tree at his house.
Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, in connecting the excessive hits that befell the State with global warming, he said that global warming is real and at least Kano people have suffered before the full rainy seasons took full effect.
The Emir then directed District Heads, Village and Ward Heads, Mosques Imams and other Stakeholders to commence immediately the planting of trees in their areas while their subjects should also be directed to plant the trees at their respective Houses.
In his address Governor Abba Yusuf said his government won’t spare anyone found involved in unauthorized tree felling in the state.
The Governor said this became imperative because of the extreme heat temperature experienced in the state in the past years which was partly attributed to inadequate trees thereby hurting the environment.
He, however, called on the people on the need to inculcate the habit of planting trees in their environments.
According to him, “Because of the huge benefit of trees in our lives, I wish to put it in the record that Kano State Government will not relent in its effort in bringing to book any resident found wanting in felling of trees without obtaining an authorized permit or clearance from the state ministry of environment and climate change. This is incognizance of the fact that global warming is real, the world is changing by adapting different techniques of mitigating climate change hence the good people of kano state must key into the change trend.
“It is on record that in the year 2023 and the first quarter of this year. Kano State experienced extreme heat with temperatures rising to 44 degrees which was partly attributed to inadequate trees thereby hurting the environment.
“The “2024 Tree Planting Campaign” is meant to checkmate the menace of indiscriminate felling of trees, climate change, soil erosion, land degradation as well as enhance productivity of agricultural land and decrease the rate of desertification.
“Let me, reiterate here that as individuals or groups we should inculcate the habit of planting trees in our minds and take responsibility for preserving and management of the trees so that together we can achieve a greener and cleaner Environment.
“Today, on this auspicious occasion marking the official flag off of this year’s tree planting campaign in which we intend to plant more than three Million trees in Kano State, in our houses, streets, markets, places of worships, places of works, farmlands, forest reserves and so on, planting trees in our environment is necessary now more than ever, particularly with the apparent dangers of global warming arising from climate change. In this regard, let me say that, our administration is committed towards planting 10 million trees within our 1st Term in office,” Governor Yusuf stated.
Earlier, the State’s Commissioner for Environment, Nasiru Sule Garo said the importance of tree cannot be overemphasized, noting that, “more tree planting would aid in lowering the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. The more trees planted, the cleaner the air will be and the air would be pure and free of toxins if there were sufficient oxygen”.

The management of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has commenced a preliminary investigation into allegations linking a person reportedly identified as one of its students to acts of online impersonation and financial misconduct circulating on social media.
In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar, the university said it had taken note of the claims being discussed in public commentary and across various online platforms.
The statement noted that BUK maintains strict standards of conduct, discipline, and character for all students throughout the duration of their studies, adding that any behaviour capable of bringing the name and reputation of the institution into disrepute is treated with the utmost seriousness.
According to the university, the alleged actions of an individual student should not be seen as a reflection of the values or character of Bayero University Kano as an institution.
“In view of the allegations, the University has commenced a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the facts surrounding the matter. The appropriate University authorities are reviewing the issue in line with the institution’s established rules and disciplinary procedures governing students’ conduct,” the statement said.
The management also commended the public-spirited efforts of Professor Farooq Kperogi and other individuals who provide financial assistance to students in need, particularly by supporting registration fees and other educational expenses.
The university noted that such acts of generosity continue to play an important role in expanding access to education and supporting deserving students.
BUK assured members of the public that if the allegations are substantiated, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken in accordance with the university’s regulations and relevant laws.
The institution also urged the public to allow the investigative process to run its course and to refrain from speculation or the spread of unverified information.

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has relieved the State Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, of his appointment with immediate effect.
KANO FOCUS reports that the development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday evening by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the decision forms part of the ongoing efforts of the current administration to reposition the state civil service for greater efficiency, discipline, and improved service delivery across government institutions.
Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the outgoing Head of Service for his contributions and dedication to the service of Kano State during his tenure.
“We wish him the best in his future endeavours and pray for his continued success in all aspects of life,” the governor said.
The governor also directed that Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, Permanent Secretary, Administration and General Services at the Cabinet Office, should serve as Acting Head of Service pending the appointment of a substantive replacement.
The statement further directed the outgoing Head of Service to hand over the affairs of the office to the acting Head of Service no later than Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
