By Mukhtar Yahya Usman
The Kano branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dissociated itself from the six Igbo Kidnappers who abducted nine Muslim children in the state and converted them to Christianity before selling them in Onitsha, Anambra state as slaves.
Kano Focus reports that the Kano Police Command had rescued nine missing children and paraded six Igbo persons who have confessed to abducting children and selling them in Onitsha, Anambra state.
In a statement on Friday, Rev. Areyemo A. Samuel, Kano chairman of CAN said the christian body condemns the kidnapping of the children “in strong terms”, adding that the suspects must be prosecuted “without any delay”.
“We condemn the kidnapping of these children in strong terms. We, hereby, state categorically that CAN does not know these criminal elements and they do not have any relationship with CAN.
“They are individuals with depraved minds and who have sold themselves to the do evil. CAN does not in any way support criminal act of any sort by any one or group of persons, hence we state clearly that the security agents should investigate deeply so as to know their accomplices whoever they may be and have all of them arrested and prosecuted without any delay and let the full wrath of the law take its course on them,” the statement said.
“We further state that although they may be bearing names of Christians but this their actions has no any religious undertone or backing, hence it should not be associated with the Christian faith and CAN as no Church or CAN ever encouraged such evil acts in all our tenets. We take complete exception to this attitude and acts of these criminals.
“We specially call on the good people of Kano State not to in any way allow this action of these minute individuals to rob and impact negatively on the good CORDIAL and harmonious relationship that had been built over the years and is existing between all religion and ethnic people in Kano State,” it added.
CAN also commended Kano Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu for leading “his gallant force who went all out to ensure the rescue of these innocent children” and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje for his “commitment to a peaceful and secured Kano state.
“We in (the) same vein commend all other security agencies in their collaborative synergy to ensure Kano is not a hide out for criminals and is totally rid of criminal elements and fully secured.
“In the same vein CAN recognizes and appreciates the fatherly roles and efforts of the Kano State Emirate Councils in ensuring continuous peace in all their domains in spite of the evil actions of these criminal elements,” the statement further read.

Islamic Forum demands justice over alleged abduction, forced conversion of minor
Nasiru Yusuf Ibrahim
The Islamic Forum of Nigeria has condemned what it described as the abduction, rape and forced conversion of a minor, Walida Abdulhadi, allegedly by an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), calling for justice, transparency and equal treatment under the law.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its Acting Executive Secretary, Dalhatu Gwarzo, the Forum expressed outrage over the alleged actions of the suspect, identified as Ifeanyi Onyewuenyi, accusing him of abducting the girl, sexually assaulting her, forcing her to convert her religion and subjecting her to a forced abortion.
The group described the alleged incident as a grave violation of human rights, religious freedom and the rule of law, insisting that the matter should not be treated lightly because of the suspect’s status as a security operative.
The Forum also criticised what it termed the silence of sections of the media and religious bodies, particularly the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), over the case. It compared the situation with the widely publicised Ese Oruru case, in which Yunusa Dahiru was convicted and sentenced to 26 years’ imprisonment.
According to the Forum, the contrast in reactions raises concerns about selective outrage and double standards in the pursuit of justice.
“Where is the media outrage? Where are the public campaigns demanding justice for Walida?” the statement queried, adding that justice should not depend on the religious identity of either the victim or the alleged perpetrator.
The Forum called on the DSS to ensure transparency in its investigation and to allow the law to take its full course, including prosecuting the suspect for alleged offences such as kidnapping and statutory rape.
It also urged the judiciary to ensure an expedited and open trial, stressing that Walida should be released immediately to her parents in line with an existing court directive.
The organisation further appealed to the media to report the case with the same intensity accorded similar past incidents and called on the Federal Government to guarantee the safety of the victim and her family.
“The Muslim Ummah will not remain silent while its daughters are abducted, violated and forced out of their faith,” the statement said.
