Ganduje renames KUST after Dangote

Kano state governor Abdullahi Ganduje has renamed the Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil after business mogul, Aliko Dangote.

Kano Focus reports that Information Commissioner Muhammad Garba announced this in a statement released on Saturday.

Malam Garba stated that the university will henceforth be known  as Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST) Wudil.

He added that the governor has already transmitted a bill to the state House of Assembly to effect the name change.

 

It will be recall that former governor Ibrahim Shekarau had also renamed the university after Aminu Dantata at the tail end of his tenure, but Rabiu Kwankwaso reversed the directive when he was reelected as governor of the state in 2011.

K-SAFE fixes Feb. 8 for 2026 General Congress

The Kano State Accountability Forum on Education (K-SAFE) has resolved to hold its 2026 General Congress on Sunday, February 8, following its maiden executive committee meeting for the year.

KANO FOCUS reports that the congress is scheduled to take place at the SBMC Hall, Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) headquarters, Audu Bako Secretariat, by 10:00 a.m.

 

The resolution was reached during the forum’s 2026 maiden executive meeting held on Friday, where members reviewed K-SAFE’s activities for 2025 and developed a proposed work plan for the 2026 operational year.

According to the forum, the proposed work plan will be presented at the General Congress for further deliberation, input and eventual adoption by members.

 

The executive meeting was conducted under the leadership of the Co-Chairperson (CSO) of the forum, Dr Auwalu Halilu, with the Secretary, Dr Abdussalam Muhammad Kani, coordinating proceedings.

The Kano State Accountability Forum on Education (K-SAFE) is a coalition of civil society organisations, professional associations, academia, the media and government institutions committed to promoting accountability, transparency and improved service delivery in the education sector across Kano State.

Police arrest wanted gang leader Dawa Dan Kamsusi, nine others in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has arrested a wanted notorious thug leader, popularly known as Dawa Dan Kamsusi, alongside nine other suspects, over alleged involvement in various criminal activities across parts of the Kano metropolis.

 

KANO FOCUS reports that the arrest followed a formal complaint received by the command on January 5, 2026, from the Hannu Da Yawa Youth Development Association, Bachirawa (HADAYA), over persistent public outcry by residents of Bachirawa, Kurna, Rijiyar Lemo, Zango, Kunture and neighbouring communities.

 

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command.

 

Residents, according to the statement had accused the criminal group, allegedly led by Dawa Dan Kamsusi, of engaging in armed robbery, shop and house breaking, mobile phone snatching, theft, drug trafficking and the destruction of vigilante group facilities.

 

In the letter, the association appealed to the police to urgently investigate the allegations and take decisive action to restore peace and security in the affected areas.

 

Following receipt of the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, ordered the Anti-Daba Unit of the command to track down and arrest those responsible.

 

According to the police, sustained intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the prime suspect, Sunusi Dawa Kamsusi, 26, of Bachirawa Quarters, Kano. Three knives and a suspected charm were recovered from him during the operation. Nine other members of the suspected criminal syndicate were subsequently trailed and arrested.

 

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to involvement in a series of armed robberies, mobile phone snatching, shop and house breaking and other related crimes.

 

The police disclosed that no fewer than 30 complainants have so far lodged reports against the suspects. They will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.

 

The Commissioner of Police commended the officers involved in the operation and expressed appreciation to members of the public for their cooperation, which he said contributed significantly to the success of the arrests.

Federal Government approves ₦1trn metropolitan rail project for Kano

The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Kano Metropolitan Rail Service in a move aimed at transforming urban transportation, boosting economic activities and easing traffic congestion across the state capital.

 

KANO FOCUS reports that the approval was disclosed by Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, while addressing the state contingent that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.

 

The development was contained in a statement signed on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

 

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf explained that his administration’s decision to realign with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC) was informed by the need to attract critical development projects to Kano State.

 

He said the proposed Kano Metropolitan Rail Service would provide a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system capable of connecting key districts within the metropolis, improving mobility for residents and stimulating trade and investment.

 

The Governor described the rail project as a landmark intervention that would significantly improve the quality of life of the people and reposition Kano as a major transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

 

He assured that the Kano State Government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure smooth implementation of the project, transparency in execution and maximum benefits for the people of the state.

 

Governor Yusuf also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to complement federal efforts through supportive policies and infrastructure development.
