Nasiru Yusuf
Kano State Government has tasked indigenous companies to learn the act of waste recycling and management as ä way of checkmating climate change.
KANO FOCUS reports that the state government urged state-owned companies/manufacturers to invest heavily in waste value chain with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions on climate change.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, stated this on Friday at the opening ceremony of a two-day Capacity Building workshop for waste sector operators in Kano state.
The Commissioner pointed out that, “the workshop is timely in view of the devastating consequences of the climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.”
He expressed optimism that, “this initiative or workshop is no doubt going to address the challenges posed by indiscriminate waste disposal and the resultant consequences in order to ensure environmental resilience for human and economic development.”
The Commissioner extoled the Federal Ministry of environment, European Union- Nigeria Climate change response programme, for bringing the programme to Kano which he said is in tandem with Kano State policy on environment under the leadership of the Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
He, therefore, described the programme as an avenue that will provide an innovative and technology-based model of sustainable solid waste management and sanitation in Kano State.
He added that, “it is also people centered with an approach that engages the waste management actors, community members at every stage of its inception and implementation.”
Dr. Getso also charged the participants to fully support the programme and utilize what the workshop has to offer so as to ensure practical application of all that will be deliberated upon and learnt, as well as, ensure successful implementation of the project for the benefit of State and the country at large.
Earlier, in his remarks, the team leader of NCCRP, Dr. Todd Ngara, said the objective of the programme is, among other things, to disseminate climate change knowledge through awareness-raising campaigns targeting the youths, civil society organizatiins, stakeholders and policy makers.
He commended the state government for its programme and policies which helped in addressing the challenges of solid waste management and sanitation in Kano State.

Ganduje acknowledges Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, 6 years after dethroning him
Ibrahim Khalil
A dramatic political moment unfolded in Kano on Tuesday as former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje publicly acknowledged Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.
KANO FOCUS reports that the unexpected gesture occurred during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, at Government House, Kano—an event attended by top political leaders and traditional rulers.
While delivering his goodwill message, Ganduje addressed Sanusi by his full royal title, drawing immediate attention from dignitaries at the ceremony. The audience responded with loud applause when he greeted the Emir and recognised his position as head of the Kano Emirate Council.
The development is particularly significant given the long-standing rift between the two figures. Sanusi was removed from the throne during Ganduje’s administration, a decision that sparked widespread political and legal controversy at the time.
However, the political landscape shifted following the emergence of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, under whose administration Sanusi was reinstated as Emir of Kano.
Observers say Ganduje’s public acknowledgment signals a possible easing of tensions and may point to broader efforts at reconciliation within Kano’s political and traditional institutions.
The moment has since been described by analysts as a “twist of fate” in Kano politics, where former rivalries appear to be giving way to cautious gestures of respect among key actors.
