The Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Amina Abdullahi Sani (HOD), has reaffirmed her commitment to promoting women’s participation in governance, particularly through the creation of reserved legislative seats for women.

KANO FOCUS reports that the Commissioner made the pledge while receiving a delegation from International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), led by Salma Ahmad Danbappa, alongside the Coordinator of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (ROLAC), Ibrahim Bello, during a courtesy visit in Kano.

She stressed that increasing women’s representation in governance is critical to achieving inclusive and sustainable development, adding that her ministry would collaborate with the state government and the House of Assembly to realise the long-awaited reserved seats for women.

On legal reforms, the Commissioner highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, noting that enforcement remains a top priority in safeguarding the rights and dignity of citizens.

Addressing rising concerns over substance abuse, Sani disclosed plans to accommodate female drug dependents at the Gaya Reformatory Centre, even as renovation work continues. She expressed concern that the temporary facility at Goron Dutse Remand Home is inadequate for effective rehabilitation.

The Commissioner also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to fully implementing the Child Protection Law to ensure the safety and well-being of children across the state.

In addition, she announced plans to launch a diversion programme aimed at tackling social challenges affecting children and communities. According to her, the initiative will begin with a temporary facility in Shagari Quarters pending the completion of a permanent centre at Gyadi Gyadi.

Sani commended Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his continued support toward improving the welfare of women and vulnerable groups.

In their remarks, the FIDA delegation and the ROLAC coordinator pledged support for the ministry’s programmes aimed at empowering women and protecting vulnerable populations.

KANO FOCUS reports that the ministry reiterated its commitment to promoting inclusion, protection, and empowerment, particularly for women, children, and persons with special needs.
