Concerned citizen urges Kano Govt to halt plan to merge science schools examination
Nura Abdullahi
A petition has been submitted to the Kano State Government, urging authorities to suspend a proposed plan to harmonize the Kano Educational Resource Department (KERD) with the qualifying examination system of the Kano State Science and Technical Schools Board.
KANO FOCUS reports that the petition, addressed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, follows an Executive Council meeting reportedly held on March 12, 2026, where the harmonization proposal was discussed. The petitioner, Dr. Umar Hadi Tijjani, expressed concern that the move could undermine decades of progress recorded by the Science and Technical Schools Board.
According to the petition, the board was established with a specific mandate to identify and nurture academically gifted students in science and technology. Over the years, it has built a reputation for excellence, producing graduates who have excelled as doctors, engineers, and researchers both within Nigeria and internationally.
The petitioner argued that the success of the science schools is largely due to their specialized curriculum, structured academic environment, and merit-based system, which distinguish them from conventional schools.
He warned that merging the system under KERD could dilute these standards, weaken the curriculum, and disrupt the administrative framework that has sustained the schools’ performance.
The petition outlined potential consequences of the proposed policy, including a decline in academic standards, reduced capacity to support gifted students, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and a possible loss of the institutions’ identity and legacy.
It also highlighted the contributions of past education advocates, including Sani Bello and Ibrahim Ayagi, noting that their efforts helped establish and strengthen the science and technical schools system in the state.
Rather than merging the institutions, the petitioner recommended increased funding, expansion of facilities, and improved staffing for the Science and Technical Schools Board to sustain and grow its achievements.
The petition further suggested that the Ministry of Education should continue managing separate curricula and examination systems for the broader student population to maintain diversity and effectiveness in the education sector.
Dr. Tijjani urged the state government to reconsider the proposal in order to preserve what he described as a critical investment in the future of Kano State and Nigeria.
