Islamic cleric urges Muslims to adhere to Sharia on wills, inheritance
Nasiru Yusuf Ibrahim
The Chief Imam of Usman bn Affan Mosque in Gadon Kaya, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, Dr. Aliy Yunus, has urged Muslims to strictly observe Islamic guidelines on wills, stressing that not every instruction left behind by a deceased person should be carried out if it contradicts the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
KANO FOCUS reports that the cleric made the call during his Friday sermon at the mosque, where he explained that while Islam encourages the fulfilment of lawful wills, it prohibits the implementation of any bequest that violates the principles of Sharia.
Dr. Aliy Yunus said a will must not be used to alter the inheritance system prescribed by Allah, deprive legitimate heirs of their rights or promote actions forbidden in Islam.
According to him, Islamic law does not permit wills that direct support for sinful or unlawful activities, allocate inheritance to a legal heir without the consent of other heirs after the testator’s death, or dispose of more than one-third of a person’s estate without the approval of the heirs.
He also said Muslims should not honour wills that seek to change the inheritance shares stipulated in the Qur’an, deny any rightful heir his or her entitlement, or instruct that outstanding debts owed by the deceased should not be repaid.
The cleric further warned against wills that promote innovations (*bid’ah*) without basis in the Qur’an and Sunnah, including directives to construct extravagant graves or engage in burial practices that contradict Islamic teachings.
Dr. Aliy Yunus also described as impermissible any will intended to create hardship or conflict among heirs, as well as instructions mandating mourning gatherings on the third, seventh, fortieth day or anniversary of a person’s death when such practices are regarded as religious obligations.
He reminded Muslims that Islam prescribes a clear procedure after a person’s death, including conducting the funeral in accordance with Islamic rites, praying for the deceased, settling any outstanding debts, implementing only lawful provisions of the deceased’s will and distributing the estate among the rightful heirs in line with the provisions of the Qur’an.
The cleric urged Muslims to seek proper Islamic knowledge on inheritance and wills to avoid disputes among family members and ensure compliance with the teachings of Islam.

According to the statement, operatives tracked him to Port Harcourt and arrested him in an operation led by the task force’s Head of Operations, CSP Bashir Gwadabe. He has since been returned to Kano.

Confirming the arrest, the task force chairman, Barr Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, said the operation demonstrated the agency’s determination to pursue suspected sponsors of violence beyond Kano State.
“Let me assure you that those who bankroll violence should know that no distance, and no hiding place, will protect them. This arrest is only the beginning. We will not rest until peace is fully restored,” he said.
The task force said the suspect remained in custody for further investigation and would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of the investigation.
It added that its operations would continue in accordance with the law, with all suspects entitled to due process.
The agency also pledged to sustain efforts to dismantle criminal gangs, identify their alleged sponsors and disrupt drug supply networks linked to criminal activities.
It urged residents, community and religious leaders, parents and youths to support security efforts by reporting suspicious persons and activities, monitoring their neighbourhoods and discouraging young people from being recruited into criminal gangs.
The task force described public cooperation as essential to restoring peace and security across the state.
