Self Help Africa Expands Safe Water Access to 187,575 Residents in Kano, Cross River
Ibrahim Hamisu
More than 187,000 residents of Kano and Cross River states have gained access to safe and sustainable water supply under the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Systems for Health (WS4H) Programme implemented by Self Help Africa.
KANO FOCUS reports that the organisation disclosed this while presenting the outcomes of the two-year programme, which began in 2024 with funding from UK International Development, at the WASH Systems for Health National Results and Learning Workshop held in Abuja.
According to Self Help Africa, the programme has improved access to clean water for 187,575 people by strengthening governance, financing and institutional capacity in the WASH sector, rather than focusing solely on infrastructure development.
In Kano State, the programme rehabilitated 51 solar-powered boreholes in Makoda Local Government Area, alongside similar interventions in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, restoring potable water supply to thousands of households.
The organisation also supported the construction of 12,642 improved household toilets in Makoda, benefiting more than 151,000 people, while an additional 5,720 household toilets were built in Yala to improve sanitation and reduce open defecation.
To strengthen sanitation service delivery, Self Help Africa provided support for 50 toilet business owners, facilitating access to ₦35 million in financing to enable them to expand their businesses and improve sanitation services within their communities.
Beyond infrastructure, the programme recorded significant policy reforms in both states.
In Cross River, it supported the passage of the Water Law and the Open Defecation Prohibition Bill. Both Kano and Cross River also reviewed and adopted new WASH policies, developed WASH financing strategies and basic sanitation access roadmaps, and adopted a Rural Water Sustainability Model to improve the long-term functionality of rural water schemes.
The programme also established dedicated WASH budget lines in 40 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across the two states and facilitated the creation of State and Local Task Groups on WASH to improve coordination and accountability.
The intervention contributed to increased government investment in the sector.
According to Self Help Africa, Kano increased its WASH budget by 169.07 per cent in the 2026 fiscal year, while Cross River recorded a 211 per cent increase. Makoda Local Government also raised its WASH allocation by 32.9 per cent, while the Kano State Government committed over ₦1 billion to pro-poor sanitation subsidies.
The organisation added that it mobilised more than $1.15 million in additional funding to expand its service delivery model.
Speaking at the workshop, the Country Director of Self Help Africa, Joy Aderele, said the programme had demonstrated that sustainable improvements in water, sanitation and hygiene depend on strong institutions, political commitment, adequate financing and effective partnerships.
She said the results recorded over the past two years showed that investments in governance and institutional reforms enable governments to deliver more sustainable WASH services.
To sustain the gains achieved under the programme, Ms Aderele said the organisation is implementing two new initiatives—the Optimising the Benefits of In-line Chlorination (OPTIC) project and the Dispensers for Sustainable Rural Water in Nigeria (DiSuRWIN) project—to improve rural water infrastructure, enhance water quality and reduce the burden of waterborne diseases.
Self Help Africa also supported the development and launch of eight strategic WASH policy documents across Kano and Cross River to strengthen sector governance, improve financing and promote evidence-based planning.
The organisation said the achievements of the WS4H Programme demonstrate that lasting improvements in water, sanitation and hygiene require not only infrastructure investments but also strong institutions, effective policies, sustainable financing and partnerships that enable governments to deliver quality services to citizens.

The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has arrested a suspected gang leader and sponsor, Ishaq Lawan Ibrahim, popularly known as Malam Keya, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
KANO FOCUS reports that the 27-year-old suspect, from Yelwa in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State, is accused of sponsoring violent gang clashes that have claimed lives and heightened insecurity in parts of the state.
The task force disclosed this in a statement, saying the suspect was arrested following intelligence-led operations after allegedly fleeing Kano as security operations against gang violence intensified.
According to the statement, operatives tracked him to Port Harcourt and arrested him in an operation led by the task force’s Head of Operations, CSP Bashir Gwadabe. He has since been returned to Kano.
The task force alleged that Malam Keya played a leading role in orchestrating and financing hoodlums involved in violent attacks in Dala and other affected communities.
The areas reportedly affected by the gang violence include Jakara, Madigawa, Yalwa, Sanka, Kul Kul, Dogon Nama, Kukar Bulukiya, Dala, Shatsari and Dandalin Turawa.
Confirming the arrest, the task force chairman, Barr Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, said the operation demonstrated the agency’s determination to pursue suspected sponsors of violence beyond Kano State.
“Let me assure you that those who bankroll violence should know that no distance, and no hiding place, will protect them. This arrest is only the beginning. We will not rest until peace is fully restored,” he said.
The task force said the suspect remained in custody for further investigation and would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of the investigation.
It added that its operations would continue in accordance with the law, with all suspects entitled to due process.
The agency also pledged to sustain efforts to dismantle criminal gangs, identify their alleged sponsors and disrupt drug supply networks linked to criminal activities.
It urged residents, community and religious leaders, parents and youths to support security efforts by reporting suspicious persons and activities, monitoring their neighbourhoods and discouraging young people from being recruited into criminal gangs.
The task force described public cooperation as essential to restoring peace and security across the state.
It also acknowledged the support of the Kano and Rivers state police commands and other law enforcement agencies in the operation.
