Non-Nutritionists handle nutritional activities in Kano – NNS

Nigerian Nutrition Society said that non Nutritionist are managing nutritional activities in Kano.
KANO FOCUS reports that Dr Faiza Isa Sheshe revealed this at a Policy dialogue on strengthening child nutrition services in Kano State organised by Organization for Community Civic Engagement (OCCEN) held on Thursday November 17, 2022.
Dr Sheshe said this affect the effort of fighting acute malnutrition especially in rural areas of the state.
According to her malnutrition is caused by inappropriate dietary intake, the presence of disease or the interplay of the two.
She said “In Nigeria, one million children under 5 die annually, 45% of them due to causes attributed to malnutrition (FMH, 2011). North western Nigeria has the highest number of malnourished children in the country (DHS, 2013 and 2018).
“According to NNHS (2018), 51.9 % of children are stunted and the prevalence of underweight children in Kano is greater than the national estimate of 22.4 per cent and the result corresponds with 2014 and 2015 findings.”
She however, acknowledged several efforts to improve the nutrition condition of children in the state which including the expansion of community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) centres from 6 Local Governments to 13 in June 2018. Dietary diversity programme in two local government areas, among others.
In her remarks the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Budget and Planning Hajiya Lauratu Ado Diso represented by Sadik Mukhtar Sadik appealed to donor partners to complement government’s effort in fighting acute malnutrition.

The Permanent Secretary who doubles as chairperson of food and nutrition committee said the state government has committed a lot of resources in that regard.
“We also solicit the support of international Organisations and donor agencies to partner with the the in fighting acute malnutrition,” the Permanent Secretary appealed.
The convener of the Policy Dialogue Comrade Abdurrazak Alkali said the event was conveyed to discuss pertinent issues related to nutrition in Kano State.

He said the meeting discussed wide range of nutritional issues, challenges and proffer solutions.
Others who spoke at the occasion include the chairman of Kano Nutrition Working Group Malam Abdullahi Zakaria, representatives of Kano State House of Assembly and young mothers forum Malama Nafisa Ahmad Murtala.

The stakeholders observed the need for intensive community sensitisation, advocacy to the government to put all machineries in place.
They advocated that nursing mothers should be enlightened on the need to utilise locally nutritional foods and benefits of exclusive breastfeeding.
They demanded that nutrition should be taught in primary and secondary schools.

Kwankwaso commends IGP over probe into Dadiyata’s disappearance

A former Governor of Kano State Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for ordering a fresh investigation into the disappearance of activist and lecturer Abubakar Idris Dadiyata.
KANO FOCUS reports that Kwankwaso made the remarks in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Saturday following recent testimony by a former aide to an ex-state governor, who allegedly claimed that police officers were responsible for Dadiyata’s disappearance in Kaduna.
Dadiyata, a lecturer and social media commentator, was abducted in 2019, and his whereabouts have remained unknown since then.
According to Kwankwaso, he and his associates have consistently advocated for a thorough investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
He described the Inspector-General’s directive for a comprehensive investigation as a “decisive and long-overdue action,” expressing hope that the process would uncover the truth behind the disappearance.
The former governor also urged police authorities to place individuals named in the allegations under close surveillance to prevent interference with the investigation.
Kwankwaso further called on the government to ensure that Dadiyata, if found alive, and his family receive adequate compensation for the trauma and hardship they have endured over the years.
He commended members of the public for sustaining advocacy efforts on the case and also praised Abba Hikima Fagge for what he described as his important role in the latest developments surrounding the investigation.
Kwankwaso expressed optimism that the renewed probe would ultimately deliver truth and justice in the case.

Cameroon telecom regulator visits NCC for benchmarking exercise

The Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (ART) of the Republic of Cameroon, Philemon Zoo Zame, on Wednesday visited the headquarters of the [Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Abuja for a benchmarking exercise aimed at strengthening regulatory collaboration and knowledge sharing between both countries.
KANO FOCUS reports that during the visit, the Cameroonian telecom regulator met with the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NCC, Aminu Maida.
A statement issued by Ayiabari A. Kigbara, Manager, Media Relations, Public Affairs Department of the NCC, said the engagement focused on exchanging ideas and best practices in telecommunications regulation, with emphasis on enhancing efficiency and development within the sector.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited has announced that its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) remains unchanged, reaffirming its commitment to stability in Nigeria’s domestic energy market.
