Traders in Kantin Kwari market of Kano metropolis have called on the Kano state Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) to demolish new shops being built over waterways.

Mr Muttaka Muhammad Takiyillah, who spoke to journalists on behalf of the traders said the new shops are likely to cause flooding in the market.

Mr Takiyyillah said the market is already overcrowded and therefore there has no safe space for any new building.

He accused unnamed powerful government officials of allocating waterways to favoured clients thereby endangering the businesses of the market traders.

He added that traders had recently complained to Mr Bashir Mudi, KNUPDA managing director  over the building of a public toilet on a waterway but he has failed to take any action.

However, Mr Mudi is yet to react to these allegations as at the time of this publication.
