‘Why Nigerian doctors prefer working abroad’
By Mukhtar Yahya Usman
A professor of Chemical Pathology Dr. Simeon Adelani Adebisi has identified frustration, poor income and the lack of good investment in the Nigerian health sector as some of the reasons Nigerian doctors leave the shores of the country to work abroad.
Kano Focus reports that Mr Adebisi a staff of Benue State University disclosed this on Friday at the 20th Abubakar Imam Memorial lecture organized by Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano (AKTH) as part of events to mark the 31st anniversary of the hospital.
Mr Adebisi said doctors working in public hospitals earn as little as N150,000 ($416) a month, with top salaries for consultants rising to a maximum of N800,000 a month, which he said is far below what they could earn in Western countries.
He said medical professionals are also frustrated due to lack of investment in the health sector, where paucity of equipment and frequent strikes prevent them from doing their job to the best of their abilities.
He added that, with the prospect of higher pay and modern facilities, Africa’s top doctors, stream overseas in search of greener pastures, learning new things and practicing in a better environment.
The professor added however, that African universities are no longer quiet places to teach and to conduct research like in the past, noting that the academic institutions hold promise of becoming highly complex and advanced.
Meanwhile the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of AKTH, Aminu Zakari said in a bid to positively impact on suburban and rural communities in Kano, the hospital was able launch the rapid response initiative with the support of the federal ministry of health.
Mr Zakari a professor and consultant of pathology added that the hospital has conducted various surgical procedures including over 300 eye surgeries on patients in Kumbotso local government area of Kano state.
He also said AKTH had carried out medical outreach programs in Dawakin Kudu, Warawa, and Gaya local government areas of the state.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo on his emergence as the Deputy Governor of Kano State following his swearing-in on Tuesday.

Ganduje acknowledges Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, 6 years after dethroning him
Ibrahim Khalil
A dramatic political moment unfolded in Kano on Tuesday as former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje publicly acknowledged Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.
KANO FOCUS reports that the unexpected gesture occurred during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, at Government House, Kano—an event attended by top political leaders and traditional rulers.
While delivering his goodwill message, Ganduje addressed Sanusi by his full royal title, drawing immediate attention from dignitaries at the ceremony. The audience responded with loud applause when he greeted the Emir and recognised his position as head of the Kano Emirate Council.
The development is particularly significant given the long-standing rift between the two figures. Sanusi was removed from the throne during Ganduje’s administration, a decision that sparked widespread political and legal controversy at the time.
However, the political landscape shifted following the emergence of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, under whose administration Sanusi was reinstated as Emir of Kano.
Observers say Ganduje’s public acknowledgment signals a possible easing of tensions and may point to broader efforts at reconciliation within Kano’s political and traditional institutions.
The moment has since been described by analysts as a “twist of fate” in Kano politics, where former rivalries appear to be giving way to cautious gestures of respect among key actors.
