Legal denies barring niqab-wearing students, says face checks are for security
Nasiru Yusuf Ibrahim
The management of Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies has denied allegations that it prevents female students wearing the niqab from entering its premises, describing the reports circulating on social media as false and misleading.
KANO FOCUS reports that the Provost of the college, Dr Ali Tamasi, stated this in a press release issued to clarify the institution’s position amid public concerns over its treatment of Muslim women who cover their faces.
According to the statement, the college has introduced security screening measures for all students and staff following reports of indiscipline and the smuggling of prohibited items onto the campus.
The management said the measures were designed to safeguard lives and property, maintain discipline and protect students’ moral upbringing.
It explained that female students wearing the niqab were only required to briefly uncover their faces at the security checkpoint to verify their identities before being allowed into the premises.
The statement added that the students were also required to open their bags for inspection, just like other students, before gaining entry.
“Female students wearing the Niqab are only being requested to unveil their faces at the checkpoint to confirm that the person is indeed a female student and not a male disguising himself as a female,” the statement said.
It stressed that the procedure did not require female students to permanently remove their niqabs or subject them to harassment.
The management further maintained that, to its knowledge, no female student or staff member had been denied entry into the college on account of wearing a hijab or niqab.
It described claims to the contrary as baseless and alleged that some individuals were exploiting the issue to pursue personal interests and create tension within Kano State.
The college also cited its existing security arrangements, including the restriction of vehicles with tinted windows from entering the premises, as evidence of its commitment to campus safety.
The statement recalled an incident in 2014 when security personnel reportedly became suspicious of a woman wearing a niqab who sought to enter the college and denied her entry after questioning her.
According to the management, the woman subsequently went to the gate of the neighbouring Kano State Polytechnic, where she detonated a bomb in a crowd, killing several people.
The college said the incident underscored the importance of vigilance and thorough security checks in preventing attacks and protecting members of the academic community.
It added that the current screening measures applied to all students, male and female, irrespective of whether they wore the niqab.
The management reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the provisions of Islamic Sharia, which it described as the foundation upon which the institution was established, while continuing to promote discipline, knowledge and security.
The provost appealed for peace and tranquillity in Kano State and prayed for the success of the state government and the continued development of the institution.
