Kano Govt urges LG chairmen to strengthen health advisory committees

Kano State Government has directed local government chairmen to strengthen health advisory committees in their respective areas.

KANO FOCUS reports that the state commissioner of health Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf gave the charge at a two-day engagement workshop with local government chairmen held in Kaduna State.

Dr Yusuf said the health advisory committees will facilitate improvement primary healthcare delivery at local government level.

On human resources for health, the commissioner directed council chairmen to consult their legislators and generate a list of qualified candidates from their respective communities for onward recruitment and deployment to general Hospitals in their respective local government areas.

He advised that the candidates should be those willing to live in their respective communities as there is no room for deployment to urban areas.

Dr Yusuf who lauded the local government chairmen for their commitment during the two-day workshop, commended FCDO funded Lafiya programme for supporting the engagement.

In his remarks the Director General of Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board Prof. Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim directed heads of medical departments at local government to comply with commissioner’s directive and rejig the committees to ensure improved coordination of PHC delivery.

He added that the board is planning to host PHC summit this year to present the result of assessment conducted at 1,200 PHC facilities across Kano state.

The DG hinted that all stakeholders in health sector will be invited including the governor and legislators to present award to best performing local government.

In his address, the National Team Lead of Lafiya Programme Dr Usman Gwarzo said Lafiya is supporting local authorities to stick to their mandate of providing quality healthcare services at PHC level.

According to him Lafiya programme provide technical support to health advisory committee; Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH+N) committee; Drug Revolving Fund (DRF) committee; Ward Development Committee (WDC) and ethical health financing committees at local government level.

In their separate remarks the chairperson of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON Kano state chapter who double as chairperson of Tudunwada local government Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu Yusha’u and that of Gaya local government Alhaji Mahmud Tajo Gaya pledged to implement all the resolutions of the meeting.

The two day engagement which was chaired by chairman House committee on appropriation Alhaji Aminu Sa’ad Ungoggo featured presentation from seasoned public health experts including Prof. Isa Sadiq Abubakar of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Some of the resolutions reached at the end of the workshop includes bi-annual meetings between health sector leadership, the legislature, and local government chairmen; payment of counterpart funding to support health programs and establishment of PHC task force committees at the local level to improve oversight and accountability.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited has announced that its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) remains unchanged, reaffirming its commitment to stability in Nigeria’s domestic energy market.

 

In a statement issued by Esan Sunday, Head of Media Relations, Branding and Communication, the company said sustaining the current price reflects its efforts to cushion the broader economy against external shocks. It noted that by absorbing prevailing cost pressures, the refinery is helping to moderate inflationary risks, promote energy affordability, and ensure uninterrupted fuel supply amid ongoing global uncertainties.

 

The company reiterated its dedication to the steady supply of high-quality petroleum products to the Nigerian market, while aligning with national objectives of price stability and energy security.

 

It also urged the public to rely solely on official communications from the refinery for accurate and up-to-date information regarding its operations and pricing.

Tinubu congratulates Garo on appointment as Kano deputy governor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo on his emergence as the Deputy Governor of Kano State following his swearing-in on Tuesday.

 

KANO FOCUS reports that Garo was sworn in by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after being nominated to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former deputy governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam.

 

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Garo’s appointment as a positive step toward strengthening unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

 

The President noted that the 48-year-old politician has held several public offices, including Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during the administration of former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He also served as the APC governorship running mate in the 2023 general elections.

 

Tinubu commended Governor Yusuf for the appointment, urging political stakeholders in the state to rally behind the administration to ensure stability and progress.

 

He also called on the new deputy governor to work closely with the governor in delivering effective leadership and accelerating development in Kano State.

 

The President wished Garo success in his new role.

KANO FOCUS reports that the unexpected gesture occurred during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, at Government House, Kano—an event attended by top political leaders and traditional rulers.

 

While delivering his goodwill message, Ganduje addressed Sanusi by his full royal title, drawing immediate attention from dignitaries at the ceremony. The audience responded with loud applause when he greeted the Emir and recognised his position as head of the Kano Emirate Council.
