The Kano State Executive Council has approved a total sum of ₦8.53 billion for the execution of critical projects and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of residents and accelerating socio-economic development across the state.

KANO FOCUS reports that the approvals were granted during the 37th meeting of the State Executive Council held on January 16, 2026, at Malam Aminu Kano House, the Kano State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the council deliberated extensively on key governance issues affecting various sectors and took far-reaching decisions in line with the development agenda of the state government.

According to him, in the area of land administration, the council approved ₦251.9 million for the payment of compensation to property owners affected by the construction of a five-kilometre dualised road project in Bagwai Local Government Area.

In the works and infrastructure sector, the council approved ₦148.8 million for the construction of an orphanage hostel at the Nassarawa Children’s Home. It also approved ₦147.2 million for clearance works and the construction of an access road at Farin Ruwa–Yan Kwadi village in Shanono Local Government Area.

Similarly, ₦660.3 million was approved for the construction of reinforced concrete drainage and interlocking tiles at Ayagi-Aisami in Bakin Ruwa Ward of Dala Local Government Area. The council further approved ₦1.71 billion for the construction of a two-coat surface-dressed road linking Chiromawa to Garun Babba in Garun Malam Local Government Area.

In the health sector, the council approved ₦187.8 million for the construction of additional office complexes and the extension of the perimeter fence at the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board to enhance workers’ welfare and security of facilities. It also approved ₦677.6 million for the first phase of reconstruction, rehabilitation and renovation works at Rogo General Hospital, which was recently affected by a fire outbreak.

Additionally, ₦520.1 million was approved for the procurement of a brand-new CT Scan machine for the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital to improve diagnostic services.

The education sector also received approval, with ₦113.8 million earmarked for the general renovation of Government Junior Secondary School (GJSS) Tatsawarki in Kumbotso Local Government Area.

In the agriculture sector, the council approved ₦830.2 million for the payment of compensation to farmers affected by the construction of five small earth dams across five selected local government areas in the state.

As part of efforts to improve environmental aesthetics and beautify Kano in line with its mega-city status, the council approved ₦176.2 million for the construction of the Arewa Knot and multi-tiered fountains at Alfurqan and Baban Gwari roundabouts.

In the water resources sector, the council approved ₦3.11 billion for the supply of non-ferrous aluminium sulphate (alum) for water treatment for a six-month period in 2026.

On policy matters, the Executive Council considered a report on the death of a female patient at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, where a pair of scissors was reportedly left in her abdomen during surgery. The council expressed deep dismay over the incident, described it as a grave act of negligence, and assured the public that the ongoing investigation would be thoroughly pursued, with appropriate sanctions applied to all culpable individuals or institutions in accordance with the law. The council also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and the welfare of citizens.

The council also acknowledged the importance of the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project and approved the phased development of the AKK Industrial Layout in Tamburawa, with Phase I to focus on the provision of basic infrastructure and perimeter fencing.

Furthermore, the council noted the persistent challenges at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Karaye, arising from structural defects despite previous interventions, and approved comprehensive enhancement of the camp’s facilities to ensure the safety, security and wellbeing of corps members serving in the state.

The decisions, according to the commissioner, underscore the Kano State Government’s commitment to infrastructural development, improved service delivery and the overall wellbeing of its people.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo on his emergence as the Deputy Governor of Kano State following his swearing-in on Tuesday.

Ganduje acknowledges Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, 6 years after dethroning him

A dramatic political moment unfolded in Kano on Tuesday as former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje publicly acknowledged Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.

KANO FOCUS reports that the unexpected gesture occurred during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, at Government House, Kano—an event attended by top political leaders and traditional rulers.

While delivering his goodwill message, Ganduje addressed Sanusi by his full royal title, drawing immediate attention from dignitaries at the ceremony. The audience responded with loud applause when he greeted the Emir and recognised his position as head of the Kano Emirate Council.

The development is particularly significant given the long-standing rift between the two figures. Sanusi was removed from the throne during Ganduje’s administration, a decision that sparked widespread political and legal controversy at the time.

However, the political landscape shifted following the emergence of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, under whose administration Sanusi was reinstated as Emir of Kano.

Observers say Ganduje’s public acknowledgment signals a possible easing of tensions and may point to broader efforts at reconciliation within Kano’s political and traditional institutions.

The moment has since been described by analysts as a “twist of fate” in Kano politics, where former rivalries appear to be giving way to cautious gestures of respect among key actors.
