FOMWAN demands justice in Walidah abduction case

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has expressed deep concern over the continued detention of Walidah, a minor from Jigawa State, despite a court ruling ordering her release.

In a press statement, FOMWAN said it had closely followed recent reports published by Daily Trust on the case, noting with dismay that the child has remained in detention weeks after the court’s decision. The organisation also expressed concern that the individual alleged to be responsible for Walidah’s abduction and unlawful detention has not been handed over to relevant law enforcement agencies for investigation and possible prosecution.

Describing the situation as unacceptable, FOMWAN stressed that no individual is above the law and that court orders must be obeyed promptly, regardless of the status or affiliation of those involved.

“As a faith-based women’s organisation committed to the protection of women, children, human dignity and justice, this situation is deeply troubling,” the statement said.

The organisation emphasised that the rights of a child must be protected at all times in accordance with Nigerian laws, Islamic principles and international conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory. It warned that justice delayed is justice denied, particularly in cases involving minors.

FOMWAN further called for all allegations of abuse, coercion or unlawful detention surrounding the case to be thoroughly and transparently investigated to ensure fairness and accountability.

The group urged relevant authorities to immediately comply with the court order by releasing Walidah and reuniting her with her parents, and to ensure that all allegations are properly investigated in line with due process, without obstruction or favouritism.

FOMWAN also appealed to civil society organisations, religious bodies and human rights groups to continue advocating peacefully and lawfully for justice in the matter, in order to preserve public confidence in the justice system and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to standing with vulnerable women and children and pledged to continue monitoring the case closely.

The statement was signed by FOMWAN’s National Amirah, Dr. Sumaye Fadimatu Hamza, and the National Public Relations Officer, Hauwa Kulu Abdullahi.
