The Kano State Accountability Forum on Education (K-SAFE) has called for strengthened collaboration with Plan International to improve education outcomes in Kano State, particularly in addressing the growing number of out-of-school children.

The call was made during an advocacy visit by K-SAFE to Plan International, where stakeholders from both organisations discussed strategies to enhance education service delivery and monitoring in the state.

Speaking during the visit, Co-chairperson of K-SAFE (CSO), Dr Auwalu Halilu, described Plan International as a key partner in improving the education sector in Kano.

He noted that Kano continues to face challenges of high out-of-school children due to its large population and the influx of migrants from neighbouring states affected by insecurity.

Dr Halilu said the visit was aimed at identifying areas of collaboration, particularly in the implementation of ABEP, and commended Plan International for its interventions, including teacher training and other education support initiatives.

He also urged the organisation to support budget analysis, school enrolment campaigns, and the engagement of K-SAFE members in monitoring its interventions, as well as involving them as volunteers in its programmes.

The chairman advocacy subcommittee of K-SAFE, Hassan Ibrahim Gama, described the forum as a co-creation of civil society organisations, government, and the media, working to promote accountability in the education sector.

He said K-SAFE is actively engaged in budget tracking, performance assessment, and monitoring of government and development partners’ interventions as third-party monitors to ensure sustainability.

Gama disclosed that the forum is planning a comprehensive three-year assessment of the education sector in Kano State, covering 2023 to 2026, to evaluate progress and identify gaps.

According to him, K-SAFE is also supporting the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP) aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state.

Responding, Advocacy Officer of Plan International, Alhassan Hamza Hussain, acknowledged K-SAFE’s role in supporting the organisation at the early stage of its operations in Kano.

He said Plan International has been operating in Nigeria since 2014, focusing on advancing children’s rights and promoting equality for girls, while addressing challenges such as poverty, violence, exclusion, and discrimination.

Hussain outlined the organisation’s key areas of intervention to include ensuring access to safe education, reducing maternal and child mortality, providing nutritional support, protecting children from violence, and empowering young people to demand accountability.

He emphasised that partnerships with communities, government, NGOs, and other stakeholders remain central to achieving these goals, describing collaboration with K-SAFE as a significant opportunity.

He also called for the institutionalisation of the ABEP, noting that the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has developed implementation guidelines for adoption by states.

Project Coordinator of Plan International, Mr Oke David, urged K-SAFE to champion the restructuring of Community-Based Management Committees (CBMCs) across Kano State, describing the partnership as fruitful.

Key resolutions reached during the meeting include capacity building for K-SAFE members, collaboration on community awareness campaigns, engagement of K-SAFE members as master trainers under the ABEP, integration of Plan International programmes into K-SAFE’s and conducting budget performance assessments in the education sector.

Both organisations expressed commitment to sustained collaboration to improve access to quality education and strengthen accountability mechanisms in Kano State.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited has announced that its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) remains unchanged, reaffirming its commitment to stability in Nigeria’s domestic energy market.

In a statement issued by Esan Sunday, Head of Media Relations, Branding and Communication, the company said sustaining the current price reflects its efforts to cushion the broader economy against external shocks. It noted that by absorbing prevailing cost pressures, the refinery is helping to moderate inflationary risks, promote energy affordability, and ensure uninterrupted fuel supply amid ongoing global uncertainties.

The company reiterated its dedication to the steady supply of high-quality petroleum products to the Nigerian market, while aligning with national objectives of price stability and energy security.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo on his emergence as the Deputy Governor of Kano State following his swearing-in on Tuesday.

KANO FOCUS reports that Garo was sworn in by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after being nominated to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former deputy governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Garo’s appointment as a positive step toward strengthening unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

The President noted that the 48-year-old politician has held several public offices, including Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during the administration of former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He also served as the APC governorship running mate in the 2023 general elections.

Tinubu commended Governor Yusuf for the appointment, urging political stakeholders in the state to rally behind the administration to ensure stability and progress.

He also called on the new deputy governor to work closely with the governor in delivering effective leadership and accelerating development in Kano State.

The President wished Garo success in his new role.

Ganduje acknowledges Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, 6 years after dethroning him

A dramatic political moment unfolded in Kano on Tuesday as former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje publicly acknowledged Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.

KANO FOCUS reports that the unexpected gesture occurred during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, at Government House, Kano—an event attended by top political leaders and traditional rulers.

While delivering his goodwill message, Ganduje addressed Sanusi by his full royal title, drawing immediate attention from dignitaries at the ceremony. The audience responded with loud applause when he greeted the Emir and recognised his position as head of the Kano Emirate Council.

The development is particularly significant given the long-standing rift between the two figures. Sanusi was removed from the throne during Ganduje’s administration, a decision that sparked widespread political and legal controversy at the time.

However, the political landscape shifted following the emergence of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, under whose administration Sanusi was reinstated as Emir of Kano.

Observers say Ganduje’s public acknowledgment signals a possible easing of tensions and may point to broader efforts at reconciliation within Kano’s political and traditional institutions.

The moment has since been described by analysts as a “twist of fate” in Kano politics, where former rivalries appear to be giving way to cautious gestures of respect among key actors.
