NCC commends Edo for protecting telecom infrastructure during road projects

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has praised the Edo State Government for adopting measures that protect telecommunications infrastructure during road construction.

KANO FOCUS reports that Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, gave the commendation at a media breakfast meeting in Abuja, noting that contractors in Edo notify both the commission and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) before commencing construction work.

According to him, the approach aligns with the commission’s advocacy for the protection of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and has significantly reduced incidents of fibre cuts.

“I would commend Edo State for its approach. Their contractors, prior to starting any work, notify the commission, which in turn informs telecom service providers. This simple action has resulted in a significant decrease in incidents caused by construction activities,” Maida said.

He urged other states to adopt similar measures to safeguard telecom assets and improve service reliability.

On the quality of telecom services in the country, Maida said the commission was beginning to observe improvements based on independent, crowd-sourced data, although more progress was still needed.

“We are not yet where we want to be, but we are beginning to see positive signals. The quality of experience is improving, even as demand continues to rise,” he said.

The NCC boss disclosed that telecom operators upgraded about 2,800 sites across the country in the past year, including the rollout of newer technologies such as 4G and 5G, as well as fibre expansion.

He added that operators—including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, and Globacom—have committed to upgrading and deploying about 12,000 additional sites this year to enhance coverage and capacity.

On consumer protection, Maida revealed that the commission recently introduced a compensation directive for subscribers affected by poor service delivery, aimed at ensuring that consumers directly benefit rather than only imposing fines on operators.

He added that the directive also extends to tower companies, which are now required to invest more in power supply and security infrastructure to improve service delivery.

In her remarks, the Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, said the quarterly media engagement was designed to promote informed public discourse on developments in the telecom sector.

“A well-informed press produces a well-informed public, and that is essential for driving real progress in the telecommunications industry,” she said.

Also speaking, the Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, Nnenna Ukoha, expressed optimism that the forum would foster open and constructive discussions on emerging trends in the sector.
