Kano Govt Debunks Report of 50 Diphtheria Deaths in Rano

The Kano State Government has dismissed a report alleging that diphtheria has killed 50 children in Rano Local Government Area, describing the claim as unverified and misleading.

KANO FOCUS reports that the allegation was attributed to Ibrahim Muhammad, member representing Rano Constituency, who reportedly claimed that 50 children had died from the disease in the area.

However, the Director-General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC), Professor Muhammad Adamu Abbas, said available surveillance data did not support the reported figure.

In a statement, Abbas acknowledged that diphtheria remained a real outbreak in the area and had resulted in deaths, but said the centre’s records showed that two deaths were recorded in Rano in 2026, while 29 deaths were recorded cumulatively between July 2023 and August 2026.

He added that the KNCDC recorded 32 diphtheria cases in Rano, with 25 patients treated at the Diphtheria Treatment Centre at Rano General Hospital and seven others at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), Kano.

According to him, 94 per cent of the affected persons had not been vaccinated, while 91 per cent presented late for treatment.

The KNCDC boss expressed concern over delays in reporting suspected cases to health facilities, stressing that early detection and treatment were critical to containing the spread of diphtheria.

Abbas also criticised the lawmaker for allegedly making unverified claims without consulting relevant authorities, including the Kano State Ministry of Health and the KNCDC.

He said the lawmaker had made similar unverified claims in October 2025, warning that such statements could mislead the public and undermine disease surveillance and response efforts.

The director-general disclosed that the centre had deployed a team to communities identified by the lawmaker as being affected by the outbreak, but said the team had so far been unable to verify the reported deaths despite engaging residents.

He questioned how 50 deaths could occur without being captured by existing community and disease surveillance structures, including traditional institutions, Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers, Ward Focal Persons, Community Informants, Community Mobilisers, Surveillance Focal Persons and Field Volunteers.

He said these structures regularly submit reports to the KNCDC and other health partners under the state’s disease surveillance system.

Abbas further said the centre had attempted to meet with the lawmaker to obtain first-hand information about the alleged deaths and determine whether he had been misinformed or could provide information that would lead health officials to the families of the alleged victims.

He explained that such information would enable the centre to conduct further investigations, including verbal autopsies where necessary, but said efforts to establish contact had so far been unsuccessful.

The KNCDC director-general, however, commended the Kano State and Federal Governments for their continued support for disease surveillance and outbreak response.

He reaffirmed the centre’s commitment to strengthening surveillance, ensuring rapid response and working with relevant stakeholders to prevent and control disease outbreaks across Kano State.
