The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has confirmed the death of one of the quintuplets delivered at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, while the remaining four babies are receiving intensive medical care.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the Board provided a clinical update on the condition of the premature babies, who were delivered as a set of five and immediately admitted into the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

According to the statement, the quintuplets were born prematurely with Very Low Birth Weight and are being treated for associated complications, including neonatal sepsis, jaundice, and instability in temperature and blood glucose levels.

The Board disclosed that all five newborns were placed on intensive care support shortly after birth, including incubator care, intravenous fluids, and antibiotic therapy, which was later upgraded based on clinical needs.

However, Baby 1, a female weighing 1.3kg, died despite receiving a blood transfusion, due to complications linked to apnoea.

The statement noted that Baby 2, a male weighing 1.3kg, is under close monitoring after undergoing blood transfusion, while Baby 3 (1.2kg) is stable under intensive care. Baby 4 (1.2kg), who also received a blood transfusion, is continuing treatment, and Baby 5, a female weighing 1.0kg, remains under observation.

It added that all the babies experienced episodes of hypoglycaemia, which were promptly managed, while feeding has been cautiously introduced using breast milk substitutes, with the infants tolerating measured quantities.

The Board further stated that the surviving babies are undergoing phototherapy to manage neonatal jaundice, a condition common among premature infants.

Under the leadership of Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the management emphasised that all necessary medical interventions were instituted promptly from delivery through admission and ongoing care.

It, however, appealed for public understanding, noting that premature multiple births are medically complex and carry significant risks despite the best available care.

The Board commended the dedication of healthcare workers at the hospital’s maternity and SCBU units, describing their efforts as critical to the ongoing management of the surviving babies.

It also reassured the public of its commitment to quality healthcare delivery and called for continued support for medical personnel.
