Kano Gov’t warns health workers against charging HIV patients

Kano State government has warned health workers to desist from charging clients for any HIV/AIDS services ranging from testing, consultation and medication.

Kano Focus reports that the Commissioner of Health, Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa gave the warning on Wednesday while declaring open a three day training workshop on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS, HIV Testing services, Infections Prevention and Control as well as data collection held concurrently at Bichi and Dawakin Tofa zones.

Mr. Tsanyawa said, the training is part of the State government’s commitment to improve health service delivery across the 44 local government areas.

He urged the trainees to step down the skills they acquire during the workshop to all staff in their respective facilities.

Also speaking the Director General, of the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, Sabitu Shu’aibu Shanono said the training is the second of its kind in less than a year.

He added that in each cluster, 2 persons from 200 health facilities participated in the training, as part of the effort of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to limit the spread of the disease and improve Healthcare delivery in the state.

He enjoined intending couples to visit health facilities to know their HIV/AIDS status before marriage and during antenatal care, to achieve the United Nation’s target to ends the pandemic by 2030.

Qatar Foundation to award scholarship to BUK indigent students

Qatar Charity Foundation, a humanitarian and development non-governmental organization, has planned to award scholarship to indigent students of Bayero University, Kano.

KANO FOCUS reports that the Country Director of Qatar Foundation, Hamdi Abdou made this pledge when he paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas on Thursday.

He said the visit was to reignite the relationship between the foundation and BUK, with a view to supporting the University in the area of providing scholarship to the indigent students.

He reiterated the foundation’s commitment to providing boreholes to address the challenges of water shortage.

The Country Director explained that last year, the foundation dug 1500 boreholes across 15 states in Nigeria; constructed 400 mosques and supported 4500 orphans with N50,000 monthly, out of which 1200 of them were from Kano State.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas expressed happiness with the visit and expressed the University’s commitment to strengthen its relationship with the Qatar Charity Foundation.

He said the University’s doors are open to assist the Foundation with research to solve some challenges related to its activities.

At the end of the meeting, the two parties agreed that a formal memorandum of understanding would formally be signed to fast track the relationship.

Kano mosque explosion: Death toll rises to 12

The death toll in the Larabar Abasawa mosque attack has risen to 12, after 11 more victims died while receiving treatment at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano.

KANOFOCUS reports that the Police Public Relations Officer of the Kano Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who confirmed the development to journalists, said they died as a result of the injuries they sustained in the incident.

According to him, 13 victims are still receiving treatment at the hospital.

KANO FOCUS had earlier reported that an explosion rocked a mosque in Larabar Abasawa Village, in the Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State on Wednesday, leaving some individuals dead and others with various injuries.

The incident occurred around 5:20 am during the Subhi (early morning) prayer.

One worshiper dies, 23 injured in Kano mosque explosion

One worshiper died and 23 persons were critically injured on Wednesday following an early morning mosque explosion at Gadan Village, Gezawa local government area of Kano State

KANO FOCUS reports that the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.

“Today, 15/05/2024 at about 0520hrs, reports were received that, there was an explosion at a Mosque in Gadan Village, Gezawa LGA, Kano State during “Subhi Prayer” and that some people got injured.

“On receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, immediately deployed the command’s combined teams consisting of experts in Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) led by CSP Haruna Isma’il and other Crime-Scene Policemen led by Divisional Police Officer, Gezawa Division, CSP Haruna Iliya.

“The scene was cordoned-off and twenty-four victims including 20 male adults and 4 male children were removed and rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano where they are currently receiving treatment,” he said.

According to him, forensic analysis at the preliminary stage revealed a suspected petrol explosion, of which a full investigation is ongoing.

He said that the principal suspect had been identified and arrested adding that the suspect is now with the Police.

“The suspect is Shafi’u Abubakar aged 38 years who said his action was purely in hostility following prolonged family disagreement over sharing of inheritance of which those that he alleged to have cheated on him were in the mosque at that moment and he did that for his voice to be heard,” Haruna said.

While the suspect is currently in police custody, he noted that a detailed investigation is ongoing and will be made public in due course.
