The International Press Centre (IPC), through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub, has condemned the alleged assault on a journalist, Mohammed Adamu, during the Eid Durbar celebrations in Bauchi State.

In a statement issued on Monday by Melody Akinjiyan press freedom officer, IPC, the organisation said the incident occurred in Bununu, headquarters of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, while the journalist was covering the festivities.

According to the statement, Mohammed Adamu, who works with Albarka Radio, a media partner to Wikki Times, was allegedly physically and verbally assaulted by police officers while on assignment alongside other media professionals and an information officer.

Narrating the incident, the journalist said he was stopped by a police constable while heading to the area designated for journalists at the event.

He further alleged that the Divisional Police Officer of the area, SP Jamilu Kabir, later ordered him to leave the venue.

“I tried to identify myself as a journalist, but he started hurling insults at me. Even as I told him I am a reporter, he began beating me. Other officers whom I knew joined in assaulting me. Many others kept beating and brutalising me,” he said.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Director of the IPC, Lanre Arogundade, described the alleged abuse of power and excessive use of force as a threat to democracy and press freedom.

He said such actions also violate the fundamental rights of journalists and raise concerns about the safety of media professionals in the country.

The IPC-SPJ Hub urged officers of the Nigeria Police Force to avoid actions that could create fear among journalists and hinder them from carrying out their duties.

The organisation also called on the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu, to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

It further urged the police to take necessary measures to compensate the affected journalist and improve the training of officers to promote professionalism, respect, and protection of citizens, including members of the media.
