Court bars Kano Anti-Corruption Commission from investigating Emir Sanusi over alleged N2.2bn land scam

A federal high Court in Kano state has restrained the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) from investigating the Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II over a fresh allegation of N2.2 billion land scam.

The court, presided over by Justice Ambrose Lewis-allagoa granted an interim order directing parties to maintain status quo until hearing in the application brought before him by the emir.

Chairman of the Commission Muhuyi Magaji, Attorney-General of Kano state Ibrahim Mukhtar, and Governor of Kano state Abdullahi Ganduje were joined in the suit.

Counsel to the Mr Sanusi Nuruddeen Jimoh moved for the experte order which the court granted and asked parties to maintain status.

The court fixed March 18 for hearing on the matter.

The court had earlier dismissed the preliminary report released by the commission recommending the suspension of the emir pending the outcome of a different investigation against the emir by the PCACC.

The court had ruled that the commission did not give the emir an opportunity to be heard before releasing the report on him, adding that such an omission was against the principle of fair hearing.

Also on Thursday, the spokesperson of PCACC Usman Bello told journalists that, the agency is conducting a fresh investigation on Mr Sanusi over alleged land racketeering at Hotoron Arewa and Bubbugaje amounting to N2.2 billion.

Other persons accused by the commission on the alleged land racketeering include Sarki Ibrahim (Makaman Kano) and Shehu Dankadai (Sarkin Shanun Kano).

The commission is expecting the emir to honour its invitation on Monday in respect of the alleged land deals, after Mr Sanusi, who was due to appear before the agency last Wednesday, requested for another date.

The probe against Mr Sanusi is widely seen as calculated attempt by Mr Ganduje to punish the monarch over his alleged support for Abba Yusuf, a member of the opposition People Democratic Party (PDP) during 2019 governorship election, the allegation the emir denied.

Mr Ganduje has also carved out four emirates in Gaya, Rano Karaye and Bichi local government areas from Emir Sanusi’s domain, apparently to curtail the monarch’s influence.

Ganduje acknowledges Sanusi II as Emir of Kano, 6 years after dethroning him

A dramatic political moment unfolded in Kano on Tuesday as former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje publicly acknowledged Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.

KANO FOCUS reports that the unexpected gesture occurred during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, at Government House, Kano—an event attended by top political leaders and traditional rulers.

While delivering his goodwill message, Ganduje addressed Sanusi by his full royal title, drawing immediate attention from dignitaries at the ceremony. The audience responded with loud applause when he greeted the Emir and recognised his position as head of the Kano Emirate Council.

The development is particularly significant given the long-standing rift between the two figures. Sanusi was removed from the throne during Ganduje’s administration, a decision that sparked widespread political and legal controversy at the time.

However, the political landscape shifted following the emergence of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, under whose administration Sanusi was reinstated as Emir of Kano.

Observers say Ganduje’s public acknowledgment signals a possible easing of tensions and may point to broader efforts at reconciliation within Kano’s political and traditional institutions.

The moment has since been described by analysts as a “twist of fate” in Kano politics, where former rivalries appear to be giving way to cautious gestures of respect among key actors.
