Kano blogger accuses PPRO of human rights violations

A Kano based blogger, Bashir Bashir Galadanci has petitioned the state police command to investigate its public relations officer over alleged abuse of office and violations of fundamental human rights.
Mr Galadanchi is accusing Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, of illegal detention, torture, and coercing him into making a false confession.
KANO FOCUS recalls that Mr Galadanci was arrested on September 11 for allegedly divulging police internal information on social media without authorization.
In a videotaped confession that went viral, Mr Galadanci apologized to the police command and alleged that he was sponsored by a former PPRO to tarnish the image of the Kano state police command.

However, in a letter to the Kano Police Commissioner signed by his counsel, Abba Hikima, Mr Galadanci claimed that the confession was obtained under duress.
The letter dated November 25 stated that Mr Galadanci was arrested, detained for five days without valid court order and tortured by the Federal Special Anti-Robber Squad (FSARS) on the personal order of Mr Kiyawa.
“The PPRO alleged that our client defamed him personally and so he caused our client to be locked up in the FSARS facility, denied administrative bail and severely beaten like a common felon until he bled through his ears.” Mr Hikima stated.
He added that the PPRO instructed some police officers including his driver Imrana, Inspector Abba Jakara and Oga Sabo to assault and coerce Mr Galadanci into making ‘an involuntary statement’.
“The PPRO also videotaped our client making an involuntary confession and shared the video virally on the social media platform.
“While it is our firm belief that the PPRO’s conduct amounts to abuse of office (in that he appointed himself a judge in his own case), it is also our humble opinion that the same act runs contrary to the provisions of sections 34,35, and 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).” He added.
The letter therefore urged the Kano state police commissioner to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo on his emergence as the Deputy Governor of Kano State following his swearing-in on Tuesday.
KANO FOCUS reports that Garo was sworn in by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after being nominated to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former deputy governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Garo’s appointment as a positive step toward strengthening unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
The President noted that the 48-year-old politician has held several public offices, including Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs during the administration of former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He also served as the APC governorship running mate in the 2023 general elections.
Tinubu commended Governor Yusuf for the appointment, urging political stakeholders in the state to rally behind the administration to ensure stability and progress.
He also called on the new deputy governor to work closely with the governor in delivering effective leadership and accelerating development in Kano State.
The President wished Garo success in his new role.

A dramatic political moment unfolded in Kano on Tuesday as former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje publicly acknowledged Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.

The moment has since been described by analysts as a “twist of fate” in Kano politics, where former rivalries appear to be giving way to cautious gestures of respect among key actors.
